Rochester Eagles Reserves secured a dramatic 4-2 victory on penalties against Kent Sands after a hard-fought 2-2 draw in regulation time, showing resilience to advance despite a shaky start making the club record for 7 consecutive competitive wins in a row.

The game began with the Eagles appearing complacent, much like in their previous outing. Misplaced passes and a lack of pressing allowed Kent Sands to dominate the early stages, though they were unable to capitalize, missing several chances.

In the 25th minute, the Eagles were forced into an early change, with Cunningham coming off injured and Jones replacing him at centre-back. Eight minutes later, Rochester took the lead against the run of play. L. Basham dribbled through the Kent Sands defence with ease and coolly slotted the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs, making it 1-0.

However, the lead didn’t last long. Seven minutes after taking the lead, K. Gordon was penalised for pulling down a Kent Sands player in the box, gifting them a penalty. Despite the Eagles’ protests, B. Shearing was booked and sin-binned for 10 minutes. Kent Sands converted the penalty to level the score at 1-1, but the Eagles managed to hold firm while reduced to 10 men, seeing out the half.

At halftime, Ozan Cinar replaced Kie Gordon as the Eagles shifted to a 4-3-3 formation to stabilize the midfield, which had been overrun during the first half.

The second half saw further adjustments, with Herb Goodman coming on for Rhys McGown and Ellis Rowden replacing Alfie Donovan within the first 20 minutes. Kent Sands eventually regained the lead in the 66th minute, making it 2-1.

Determined to find an equalizer, the Eagles switched to an attacking 4-2-4 formation, bringing Jack Kemp on for Liam Basham. The change paid dividends in the 82nd minute when Ellis Rowden latched onto a perfectly timed pass from Reece Bissenden and finished calmly to make it 2-2.

With no further goals in regulation time, the match went to penalties. The Eagles were clinical from the spot, with Brad Shearing, Patrick Taylor, Josh Jones, and Reece Bissenden all converting their penalties. Goalkeeper Alex Clifford made two crucial saves, securing a 4-2 win in the shootout and sending Rochester Eagles Reserves through.

Man of the Match: A joint award for Herb Goodman and Liam Basham, whose performances were pivotal in keeping the Eagles in the game and pushing for the equalizer.
